the wash

May 17, 2015

800wash

Washing and cleaning and walking. Mark Strand and Sean Hayes. Coffee, iced tea.

Conversation and laughter. A sprinkle of dissent between the kids. But moving on.

Card games, silly games. Friends. Bananas and apples and gouda cheese. Not together.

A morning sky that was blue, so blue. The afternoon sky clouding with grey, quiet grey. The trees filling out. The tulips popping forth. The grass freshly mown.

Later the wind blows, rain falls, twinkle lights switch on.

In the dark, there is a wash of yes and so much that’s good. An understanding that there needn’t be more. An embrace. An acknowledgement. Thank you and I’ll see you again soon.

bearing drizzle and beauty

August 31, 2014

800sunflowers.square
it was drizzly and grey. and quiet. i stepped outside and headed to the garden. i knew there were tomatoes waiting for me. turned out the sunflowers were waiting for me too. one of them had tumbled over in the night, its weight just too much to bear. i cut off the blooms and brought them inside, placed them in a jar of water.

the rain continued to fall. my husband and kids were reading or drawing or something. a saturday morning with nowhere to be but exactly where we were. drizzly and grey. and quiet. i roasted the tomatoes and made photographs of the flowers. i had to catch my breath. because sometimes the beauty is just too much to bear.

on your way

if you slice one green zucchini into rounds, then further slice into quarters and
chop one green chili and
cut the kernels from two grilled ears of corn and
mince four or five cloves of garlic

you’re on your way

in a skillet, heat a tablespoon or two of olive oil and
toss in the garlic and green chili and then
the corn and
green zucchini and

you’re on your way

stir ingredients for one or two minutes and
smell that heavenly garlic
oh, the garlic
heavenly

you’re on your way

sauté lightly
so that all is slightly crisp
be careful not to overcook and
season with coarse salt and freshly ground pepper

you’re on your way

an unassuming dish
to accompany what you like
be it vegan or of the meatier variety
delightful in taste and simplicity

yes, you’re on your way

to enjoying fresh weekend food which
surely can be enjoyed weekday but
for now it’s the weekend
so sink in

you’re on your way

slippers and hardwood floor

February 23, 2013

michellegd_slippersandhardwoodfloor-200

it is saturday and i grab my camera
know i must take a photograph of
right now.

it is slippers and hardwood floor
and it is so much more.

it is fullness and contentment
it is temporary silence as the children play in the other room
and my husband cleans the workroom.

sunlight begins to move through windows
the day begins to take form.

and so i capture this moment
of silly mismatched slippers
and full heart.

i will return to this moment again and again
i will receive the next when it arrives.

i am here and i am ready
heart open.

sanctity

September 9, 2012

children asleep
i sit beside my beloved
porching it
with a sweet summer breeze
that cools the air
and melts the heart
there is music
and twinkle lights
that light our way through the evening
light our way to each other
the sanctity of a summer eve

crouching among the clover

July 14, 2012

my husband is the runner in the family; i run, but only sort-of-run. my children seem to have inherited my husband’s love for running, and so it is with him that they run. on the weekend.

sometimes the three of them run together, sometimes the runs are split into father-son and father-daughter. it all depends on individual moods and who wants to go how far on a given saturday or sunday. me? i am the picker-upper…walking to the end of our road or driving to a pre-determined spot for a longer run.

and while i wait to pick up either or both children so that my husband can continue the rest of his run, i take a moment to crouch down into the grass and see what the world looks like from a clover’s point of view. i glimpse through a sea of tall grass and imagine that this is the view afforded to a fox or perhaps a rabbit.

there are mornings when i want to run with my husband and children. and perhaps there will be morning runs for the entire family in our future. but for now, it is a special activity in which my husband can engage with our children, a passion he can share with them, a discipline he can teach them. for that, i am so happy. i am thrilled to see them bonding over this time spent outdoors. thrilled to witness the enthusiasm, the togetherness.

and i’ll admit that if i am afforded an extra ten minutes to stand among the clover and the grasses by myself…well, for that i am quite happy as well.
